Technical Tours

Technical Tours

Technical tour 1: An exploration of the Port Adelaide region

This tour will showcase some of the coastal hazard and mitigation responses unique to the Port Adelaide region.  Port Adelaide is particularly low lying susceptible to coastal flooding, with a number of unique challenges and values.  This tour will showcase the complexities of urban development interfacing with coastal hazards. This tour will showcase how the local ecology has responded to coastal flood risk including a constructed  living shoreline  along the Port Adelaide River, fronting the Yitpi Yartapuultiku, Aboriginal Cultural Centre. This living shoreline  co-design process with first nation representation will be discussed along with the design and construction considerations and challenges.

Technical Tour 2: Managing Adelaide’s metropolitan beaches

This tour will explore the 28 kilometre stretch of Adelaide’s actively managed metropolitan coastline, from Kingston Park to Outer Harbor. The tour will cover the unique features of this coastline and history of management approaches over the last 50 years, including the sand backpassing pipeline from Glenelg to Kingston Park, the West Beach sand replenishment program, and the Semaphore offshore breakwater.

Technical Tour 3: Ports focused  tour

This behind-the-scenes tour will showcase the operations that keep South Australia’s maritime trade moving. From container handling to bulk cargo operations, you'll gain insight into the vital role our port plays in the region’s economy. Learn about the history, the latest innovations in port infrastructure, sustainability initiatives, and the future of port operations. This is a unique opportunity to explore South Australia’s largest port.
